Grand Island sits along the Platte River in the east central part of Nebraska. The Union Pacific and Chicago Burlington & Quincy crossed at grade on the city's east side, and for many years this proved to be a busy intersection for train traffic. In 1995, a new Burlington Northern overpass over the Union Pacific main line was completed. Today, BNSF operates the ex-CB&Q line, while the U.P. continues its dominance on its Overland Route. In this program, we begin by showing operations in Grand Island in 1979, when a tower controlled the diamond. We then capture the action in May 2010. Union Pacific keeps its double track main line busy with all types of freight, while the BNSF hauls mostly Powder River Basin coal trains on its route from Alliance to Lincoln, Nebraska.
